He seemed shocked by all the information I seemed to have on him.

“Clever girl. I see you’ve done your homework. Then I suppose you can figure out why I wanted you here.”

He wanted to say something more, but his phone interrupted him.

“Erik!” he spoke into the receiver, with a wide insincere grin.

Was that Erik? Why was he calling him?

“Always nice to hear from you! Yes, we’re both here,” he nodded towards me. Mockingly, he added: “He sends his regards.”

“Oh, I wouldn’t harm a hair on fair Adrianna’s head, you know that. I just wanted us to get to know each other a little better. Now, now, what’s this? Calm down, otherwise I’m going to hang up the phone and you won’t hear from me again, until it’s too late for both of you,” he said, the grin now gone from his face.

“You are free to join us, with or without the FBI escort. Whichever floats your boat. And yes, there’s a lot we need to talk about. So, you better get here fast, we won’t be waiting for long,” and with those words, he hung up.

“Well, it looks like we’ll be having company soon,” he turned towards the bar. “Can I get you anything? Scotch on the rocks? A Shirley Temple? Anything?” He sounded as though he amused himself. Me, not so much.

All I could think about was Erik and what they had planned for him once he got here.

“Don’t take it all so seriously, sweetheart,” he turned towards me again after refilling his glass. “It’s nothing personal, it’s just business.”

“If that’s how you treat your best friends, I’m afraid to ask what you do to your enemies.” He only smiled this time.

“You’ve got spunk, I’ll give you that. I knew there was a reason why Erik likes you so much. But, do tell me,” he started circling me uncomfortably, like a hawk. “Why do you like him? What makes a woman like you fall for a guy like him? Huh?”

“I don’t have to tell you anything. But I will tell you one thing, he’d never treat his friends the way you treated him,” I snapped.

“Oh, honey, if you only knew all the stuff Erik and I have done over the years- ! Maybe he’ll even be willing to share some stories, for good old times’ sake, when he arrives. And if I’m not mistaken, that sound alerts us that someone has just opened the front gate.” He turned toward the door. “Any minute now,” he smiled, seeming to relish the power he had over us.

I looked toward the door with conflicted emotions. Part of me wanted it to be Erik, wanted him to rush in and save me from this monster. But the other part of me wanted him to stay far away and safe. There was nothing good that was going to come to him from his supposed friend.

The minutes ticked by until finally the door opened and Erik stood before me. I was still taken in by how handsome he was, still dressed to the nines in an expensive suit. Gone, though, was the confident defiance that typically hovered around him like a cloud. Today it was replaced with an air of raw panic.

His eyes were burning with a fire I’ve never seen before as he was scanning the room. Once he saw me, his facial expression changed completely.

“Adrianna!” he rushed to my side.

He hugged me tight, and I never wanted him to let me go. He finally pushed me away and held me at arm’s length so he could see for himself that I was unharmed.

“Are you OK? Did this bastard hurt you in any way?” his eyes scanned me up and down until he was satisfied that nothing was broken and I appeared to be alright.

“How touching! The two star-struck lovers, together at least! Bravo! Bravo!” Our audience was watching our every move.

“Stephen, what the hell is the matter with you? Why would you do this?” Erik asked, and I could hear the disappointment and pain in his voice; it almost broke my heart.

“Well, you see Erik, I’m afraid that our business isn’t doing as well as I thought it would. And as a result, I needed to push it along a little. You understand how it goes, right?” Stephen asked.

Without any reply, Erik made a move as if to attack Stephen, but he was stopped mid-air.

“No, no. Stop right there, or else you’ll make me use this little gadget I’m not overly fond of.” There was a silver glistening of a small semi-automatic handgun.

  Erik stood fearless.

“You don’t scare me with that mouse gun of yours,” he snapped.

“Well, it’s not really meant for you,” Stephen said wickedly as he leveled the barrel of the gun at my forehead. “I knew that would shut you up,” Stephen said as Erik stood shaking with fear and rage. “This all could have been so easy, if you had only kept your nose out of things and let me handle it. All you needed to do was sign the papers and collect the checks. But you couldn’t drop your endless questions and scrutiny. I guess that just means more for me. I just have to figure out where to dump the bodies. Any suggestions?” He was mocking us. I could feel cold beads of sweat rolling down my back.

“You’ll never get away with this Stephen,” Erik said.

“Oh, come on! You serve me one cliché after another! Of course I will; I have more money than God. Now don’t try and be a hero here Erik. You and I both know there is no way you and your girl walk out of here, this isn’t a movie. This is real life, and you know better than most that real life doesn’t forgive us our mistakes. No. It makes us suffer. Just like it made you suffer.”

I could see that Erik was deeply affected by these words and that even Stephen’s gun hand, started shaking.

“You don’t get to talk about that anymore, Stephen. You lost that privilege when you stabbed me in the back,” Erik replied coldly. “And even if you get rid of us, then what? So you’ll have even more money than you already have. Will it keep you warm at night? Will it be there for you when you need it? Think about it. You can still turn all this around and we can make it work somehow. The two of us,” Erik’s voice softened as he tried to coax Stephen out of the darkness of his recent decisions.

It almost seemed to work. Stephen was lost in thought, when suddenly, the front door opened.

  It was Agent Briggs.

“Sir! I noticed- Ah, I see. He’s here.” He looked at Erik.

“Perfect timing Briggs! I was just telling these two love birds what I have planned for them. I’m thinking murder-suicide. What do you think? I’m thinking my dear friend Erik here catches fair Adrianna coming on to me and shoots her in a jealous rage before turning the gun on himself. Oh my, it’s brilliant!” he laughed and clapped gleefully.

This was it, I thought to myself. I could see Agent Briggs pointing his gun at Erik until Stephen stopped speaking. Then, without a word, Briggs slowly brought the sight of his gun to rest on Stephen.

“I’m afraid I can’t let you do that boss,” Briggs said.

“Briggs, what the hell are you doing?” Stephen roared.

“Put down the gun and no one gets hurt,” Briggs’ voice was authoritative and left no room for negotiation.

All of a sudden, Erik and I were no longer the center of attention.

“Briggs, you traitor!” Stephen yelled wildly, and gunshots rang out.

I closed my eyes and dropped to the floor, instinctively covering my head with my hands. The shooting lasted only seconds, followed by deafening silence.

When I opened my eyes again, Erik was on his knees in front of me, helping me to sit up and wrapping his arms around me.

“Are you guys OK?” Briggs looked at us with concern.

I buried my face in Erik’s chest, and could only hear him mumble that we were fine. I was trying to catch my breath, trying to figure out what just happened. Was Briggs really a good guy or a bad guy? Was he trying to protect us, or trying to get Stephen out of the way so Briggs could have his cut of the money?

“It’s all over now.” I saw Brigg’s hand resting reassuringly on Erik’s shoulder. “And I guess I owe you a few explanations.”

I could see that Erik was just as confused as I was, and we were both waiting for someone to shed some lig
ht on this whole mess.

“We’ve been onto your partner for quite some time now Erik,” he started. “And at first, we thought you two were working together. But after gathering additional information it was obvious that you had no idea what was going on. Stephen Finn was behind one of the biggest pharma frauds of this decade, and he was going to let you take all the blame.”

“Were you two partners in on it?” Erik asked. Briggs seemed distant for a second.

“Actually, no. They are dirty agents. We’ve been trying to find the mole within the organization for years, and they revealed themselves. Afterward, it was all just a matter of setting the whole thing up. Now we can finally close this case and clean up the mess,” Briggs said.

“Is Stephen-” Erik couldn’t bring himself to ask.

Briggs nodded only once. Erik lowered his gaze. Despite everything, he was deeply hurt by his best friend’s betrayal and his unfortunate ending.

“Do you need us for anything right now?” I could see that all of this was too much for Erik and that I needed to get him out of there.

“Well, no. Not right now. Go on home and get some rest, you two. You’ve been through quite a lot today. But, I’ll need you to come in first thing tomorrow and give your statements,” he said kindly.

  We thanked him in return.

  Erik

It all felt like the morning after a horrible nightmare, as Adrianna and I were driving home. I still couldn’t believe that we had come so close to death, and that Stephen was gone. Yes, he was a bastard, a coward, a greedy son of a bitch, but we’d been through so much back in our childhood, that I don’t know if I would have managed without him. He got me out of trouble multiple times growing up, but somehow along the road, I lost him.

“I know it’s a stupid question, but are you OK?” Adrianna asked, looking at me with concern in her deep aquamarine eyes. I couldn’t help but smile.

“I’m fine, baby. You?” I placed my hand on her knee.

“Yeah.” She didn’t seem physically hurt but I knew from experience that psychological trauma was a hundred times worse.

“Be honest with me Adrianna, did Stephen hurt you in any way?” I asked again.

“No, he just talked a lot. About himself. He really liked himself didn’t he?” she asked.

“He wasn’t always like that. I don’t know what happened to him but that was not the Stephen I grew up with,” I admitted as much to myself as to her.

Adrianna chewed her bottom lip for a minute and I could tell she had something on her mind. I didn’t push though and waited for her to say it. Finally she spoke up, “there is something I’ve been meaning to ask you,” she said.

“Sure, ask,” I feigned coolness, but in fact, I never felt so anxious in my life.

“I heard you having a phone conversation one morning. And it sounded though you knew all about the medication. You mentioned…-

“Let me stop you right there,” he interrupted “It was my mom.”

  “Your mom?” she sounded surprised.

“Yeah, it’s something I haven’t shared with anyone but Stephen. When I was a kid, we lived in Brooklyn,” I was driving, so I couldn’t look at her as I was talking, but something assured me that I was all she could see.

“My dad was a dirt bag who got drunk and high and beat both my mom and me. My mom would take most of the beating herself, but as I grew older, I realized he was afraid of me, because I could fight back. So, I did. Eventually he left me alone but he never let go of mom. Somehow, despite all the shit he put her through, she loved him and one way or another, she always returned to him. Eventually, she couldn’t it anymore and she wouldn’t leave so she started using herself. I kept telling her to get out, and a few times, she tried but the bastard always found her and convinced her to come back. Then, finally, she said no, which was a surprise for both of us. They’ve been apart for ten years. She called me to tell me that he came again looking for her, that he was clean and sober, and that he wanted her back. I got pissed off bad, I mean, wouldn’t you?” I could see her nodding from the corner of my eye.

“I don’t even know what I said, but I can imagine that some of it could have been interpreted wrongly by an eavesdropper,” I winked at her, and she smiled.

“Where’s your mother now?” she asked shyly.

“Not with him. I got a little place with a garden so hopefully, she’s busy tending to the flowers and not to drunken idiots. Sounds like a much more rewarding experience, don’t you think?”

She laughed. Her laughter soothed me and made me believe that we might actually make it out of this whole thing in one piece, maybe even together.

Suddenly, I stopped the car. It was early evening, and seeing it was the middle of nowhere, no one was around. Adrianna looked at me curiously.

She was so beautiful. I could feel my breath stopping, and her own breathing becoming deeper. She knew exactly what I needed. Yes, it was the wrong time, and the wrong place, but I didn’t care.

I realized that life was too short not to go after what we want. And I knew I wanted her. Now and forever. Her tenderness, her sweet restraint and an even sweeter surrender.

She cupped my face, adoring me with her touch. I pulled her closer, over the seat. I kissed her, slowly and passionately, and I could feel her wriggling like a hot wire. The more I kissed her, the more she pressed herself to me. I wanted her badly.

I wanted to tear the blouse she was wearing, but even in the midst of ecstasy, I remembered we’d have to drive home, and she probably wouldn’t want to be driven half naked down the highway. Gently, I lifted her arms above her head and took off her blouse. Her breasts spilled before me, held cozily in their fabric restraint.

Placing a gentle kiss on her shoulders, I removed the straps of her bra, and released her from it. When my mouth found her breast, I heard her gasp. Her fingers buried themselves in my hair, and I could feel her pulling me to her, as I suckled on her nipples, making them hard.

My hand traveled down towards her thigh and she threw her head back, waiting for my instruction. She said nothing. She just followed my lead, allowing my curious fingers and tongue to do whatever they wanted.

“Come,” I said, urging her to leave the car. She didn’t hesitate a second.

We met again in front of the car, when I told her to bend over. We quickly got rid of her pants and all I could see was her sweet ass and legs that wouldn’t stop. My throbbing erection had already reached the point of explosion, but I didn’t want to rush things.

Without any word, she lifted her hips slightly upward, so that my hot manhood nestled cozily in the moist folds that hid her pearl. As I kept massaging her with my tip, a tremor of ecstasy shook her. I know she wanted me to spank her, so I obliged.

I slapped her perfect alabaster behind once, twice, three times. I could feel myself getting painfully hard, but it wasn’t about me. It was all about her.

Her body started convulsing in spasms, one after the other, as I pushed into her. I grabbed her by the hair and pulled hard, arching her back, just the way she liked it.

Bringing her ear close to my lips, I whispered.

  “I love you.”

She clutched me inside of her and I felt like I was losing myself with every deep thrust, pulling her closer to me.

My vision blurred, as I plunged deeper and deeper into her soft wetness. Finally, I felt my release and roared with pleasure when she joined in, completely letting go of her self-control.

We stood for a moment trying to catch our breath. Everything that we felt for one another had been said without words.

  Adrianna

I have to admit, I hadn’t expected that. I hadn’t expected him to say he loved me. I decided to reciprocate. “Me too,” I said.

  He seemed confused.

  “You, too what?” he asked.

“Love you. I love you, too,” I said.

“Oh!” he laughed out loud. I smiled. “Good to know. So, what do we do now?” he asked.

“Easy. We live our lives,” I answered.

“And how do we do that?” His eyes were on the road, leading home.

  His home. Our home?

“One day at a time. And most importantly,”

  “Yes?”

  “Together,” I said.

  “I like that,” he smiled.

I leaned my head back and closed my eyes. With all that we’d been through, I knew that we could weather any storm if as long as we had each other.

“What do you say I take us home? Our home?” he asked suddenly.

  “Your home?” I asked.

“No. Our home. If you want it to be, of course,” he said.

“Yes, of course I do!” I was happy beyond words. “Do we get to keep the playroom?”

“Only if you want to. If not, it’s gone.” Something told me he wouldn’t have taken it so lightly if I had told him to get rid of it. Luckily, I kind of didn’t want it gone.

  “Nah, keep it.” I winked.

We both laughed and knew that we had found a partner for life.

  THE END
